Curetes Street in Ephesus, Turkey

The beating heart of ancient Ephesus was Curetes Street. It was the main road where people walked, talked, and did their shopping. It was named after the priests of the goddess Artemis, who were called the Curetes.

Today, when you walk along Curetes Street, you step into the past. You see the remains of these old buildings and imagine what life was like back then. As you explore, imagine the hustle and bustle of ancient life. Each step is a connection to the past.

Today it is one of the largest ruins in Turkey, and one of the largest Roman ruins anywhere in the world. So, wander on, and let the whispers of the ancient city guide you.

You can watch the full Street Gems video about Ephesus below, which will give you a good idea of what Curetes Street looks like, and looked like in its heyday.

It also features the other significant monuments, such as the Odeon, the Library of Celsus, the Terrace Houses, the Great Theater, the ghostly artificial harbor, and the remnants of the stadium.

These monuments were testimony to the wealth and importance of Ephesus as a Roman city. In fact, it was the capital of the Roman province of Asia. This role as a political center, as well as having one of the best harbors in the region, made it an important economic and cultural hub.
